Intrigued by its title, I began Baby Reindeer late one night, assuming it was a comedy. But before long, I'd made it to the early hours of the morning with a show that became more menacing by the episode.
In far less eloquent terms, I reviewed it to friends as an uneasy watch. What really does start out like a dark "comedy-drama", as described by creator, writer and star Richard Gadd, leaving you feeling uncomfortable but curious, soon turns into shame, shock, fear and ultimately, horror. And yet, you can't quite look away.
Looking back now, that's kind of the point of the limited series, which Gadd adapted from his award-winning one-man show from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe based on his life. That's right, Baby Reindeer is inspired by Gadd's own experience as a struggling comedian, and the hundreds of hours of voice messages and over 40 000 emails he received from his stalker.
